Lawrence Leung won the crowd over from the moment he bounced onto the stage with his side-parted fringe and blue tracksuit top and proclaimed his mission - to “be cooler than his brother Dennis.”
As an opener, Lawrence ran through a slide show of himself and Dennis as babies to show everyone how it all began, and then identified the areas of coolness he needed to work on, which included fashion, ladies and attitude.
Of Lawrence’s attempts at coolness, he probably received the most laughs during the section on trying to be successful with the ladies. This involved some excerpts from a self-help book on the art of seduction that he’d picked up from a second-hand bookstore and part of an email from a mailing list to men that suggested using the sentence “Are you looking for a new direction?” as it would make them think of nude erections - a tactic he tried on a few suspicious women.
The night had a lot of cute moments but most of all, Lawrence won over the audience with his big heart. One highlight was when a member of the audience (apparently unstaged) produced a rubix cube to test Lawrence’s claim to be able to solve it in under 90 seconds. Much to everyone’s delight, he managed to do it in around two minutes. There was an emotional moment when he was honest about how much he really loved his brother.
Finally, Lawrence got to the breakdancing and showed a clip of his bold attempt at the national finals in Melbourne. There were plenty of laughs and cheers throughout the night and one gets the feeling this nerdy-looking, energetic and highly likeable twenty-something from Melbourne won more than a few fans this side of the country.
