What's On

LYCEUM HIGHWAY & Metropolis Monologues

From a road trip full of twists and turns to a swan who’s looking for a love – this new season from Melbourne Writers' Theatre has it all.

It’s not every theatrical season that offers an intriguing road trip followed by an avian love story. An inquisitive hitchhiker followed by an Egyptian heartbreaker, a haunted farmer, a Spanish queen. And it’s not every season that puts actors like Kevin Dee and Laura Iris Hill on a stage with Amir Rahimzadeh and Sarah Hamilton.

But this is no ordinary theatrical season. In a double-bill event that will see the compelling new play Lyceum Highway followed each night by the richly entertaining Metropolis Monologues, audiences will be treated to a 70-minute drama and a 50-minute showcase. In the process, they will experience the breadth of talent, skills and ideas possessed by playwrights from Melbourne Writers’ Theatre. K V Adams won The 2025 Amethyst Award for Lyceum Highway, her script standing out for its originality and power. The ten other writers who penned the monologues – which will be presented in two different showcases over the seven nights – have created stories filled with humour and pathos, mystery and history, a diverse collection of themes ensuring that there is something for everyone.

Lyceum Highway will be directed by Brooke Fairley while Jennifer Munday will direct Metropolis Monologues - both of these directors also writers in their own right, and both of them with a unique creative vision. And the audience will watch both shows unfold in the atmospheric space of The Stables @ Meat Market, with a maximum capacity of 50 patrons guaranteeing an intimate, immersive experience for all.

If you are looking for a rewarding and evening of new theatre, don't miss this exciting double-bill.
