My Brilliant Career

Hailed as a ‘funny, feminist triumph’ (The Guardian) and earning multiple five-star reviews for its sold-out premiere season in Melbourne, the joyous My Brilliant Career now embarks on a limited, exclusive Australian tour. Ready to blow Wollongong away, it’s a big-hearted musical for all who dream of a bigger, more brilliant life.

Set in the sweeping landscapes of 1890s Australia, this electric reimagining transforms Miles Franklin’s literary heroine into a singer-songwriter for this very moment. Unapologetically ambitious, Sybylla Melvyn is wholly uninterested in the future society expects of her. Instead, she marches to the beat of her own drum, challenging class, gender and family to find her own voice.

Led by the formidable Kala Gare (SIX the Musical) – and featuring a dynamic cast of actor/musicians – this smash-hit musical earned critical acclaim and swept Melbourne’s Green Room Awards, including winning Outstanding Production in 2024.

With a powerhouse score blending contemporary pop, bush ballad and raucous pub rock, and breathtaking design from Tony Award-winner Marg Horwell, this audacious, exuberant show is a must-see.

The script is based on a true story, although this dramatisation can feel somewhat contrived, with important assertions not interrogated, and credibility stretched as a result.

    Izzard: The Tragedy of Hamlet
To Shakespeare’s text be true is the obvious goal here, and writer, director and actor have each scored.

In the care of Pinchgut Opera’s director, Erin Helyard, this music, formulaic as it indeed is in some respects, sprang off the page into an experience rich in emotions.

Even when individual works did not fully land for me dramaturgically, there is no denying the precision, intelligence and care of the artists creating them.

Unabashedly and unapologetically entertaining, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels delights in its hoax hokum, a whimsical hustle of musical comedy bustle.
