The Death of A Chatterbox (Thu, 27 Aug 2026)

The Death of A Chatterbox, freely adapted from a Japanese story, is reimagined in English for the Australian stage. This performance brings multiple characters vividly to life through voice, expression, and imagination, with the performer remaining seated throughout. The work also explores the ideas that underpin it: death in Buddhist philosophy; the Noongar understanding of life, death, and continuing connection; and the migrations and journeys that have shaped Halit's own path across Turkey, Japan, and Australia. Drawing on his experiences of living and performing across these three countries, Halit reflects on how stories shape our journeys and connect us across cultures.

About Halit Mizirakli

Halit, better known on stage as Warattei Harito, is currently in Perth researching the storytelling practices of the Wirlomin Noongar community in south Western Australia, and their role in preserving Indigenous knowledge and collective memory. Halit has performed Rakugo for over 20 years, telling his stories in three languages - English, Japanese, and Turkish. He has been the recipient of the Jury's Special Prize at the Sakuden Grand Prize competition, and has performed at the Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall in New York City. He is currently Adjunct Associate Professor at Curtin University, visiting from the Faculty of Global Studies at Chiba University of Commerce. Through his work, Halit seeks to build meaningful connections between cultures and to explore the enduring power of storytelling across languages, traditions, and communities.
