Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead

Beacon Road Productions Brings Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead to Marrickville This June

Sydney independent theatre company Beacon Road Productions will present a bold new production of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead this June at the Greek Theatre at Addison Road Community Centre.

Running from 19–28 June, the production marks a new collaboration between Beacon Road founder and director Dany Akbar and producers/performers James Martin and Russell Cronin, who will also take on the title roles in this contemporary, fast-paced interpretation of Tom Stoppard’s celebrated absurdist comedy.

Founded in 2019 by Akbar, Beacon Road Productions has built a reputation for inventive, actor-driven storytelling that embraces stripped-back theatricality, imaginative staging, and bold creative risks. The company first emerged with a fast-tracked production of The Dumb Waiter and has since continued producing independent theatre focused on atmosphere, performance, and accessibility.

Beacon Road’s original production A Stolen Giraffe became a finalist at the Sydney Fringe Festival, helping establish the company as an emerging voice within Sydney’s independent theatre scene.

Widely regarded as one of modern theatre’s defining works, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead follows two minor characters from Hamlet as they attempt to understand the increasingly bizarre world unfolding around them. Trapped somewhere between comedy and catastrophe, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern stumble through philosophical debates, strange encounters, and theatrical chaos while questioning fate, identity, and whether anyone is truly in control of their own story.

While the play is often celebrated for its intellectual depth, this production leans heavily into its humour, unpredictability, and humanity.

“At its core, the play is hilarious,” says producer and performer James Martin. “It’s fast, chaotic, existential, and strangely relatable. You don’t need to know Shakespeare to enjoy it.”

For Martin and Cronin, the production also marks the opportunity to step into two of modern theatre’s most iconic and demanding comic roles, bringing their own chemistry and collaborative history to the centre of the production.

Known for their visually inventive and performance-driven work, the creative team’s approach places strong emphasis on immediacy, energy, and the unpredictability of live theatre.

Founder and director Dany Akbar says “There is a magic at work in these shows”.

“Often we are finding significance in melodrama where there is none, but sometimes, we can hold a mirror up to reality itself. Who knows what will happen.”

Whether audiences are longtime fans of Stoppard or discovering the play for the first time, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead promises an evening of sharp comedy, theatrical invention, and existential confusion.
